Special Options for Student Grants
Student grants are highly useful in allowing a college student to pay for their college education. However, were you aware that there are grants that are geared towards students in need of financial aid that come from disadvantaged backgrounds? The United States Department of Health does this for full time students who are enrolled in nursing programs or a field within the health profession. The colleges and universities that participate in this program are the ones who are responsible for selecting the grant recipients. They make this determination based upon a student's financial need and other characteristics.
The applicants who are eligible for these student grants must meet strict criteria. First of all, the applicant must be enrolled in a major that is applicable to the health profession. These majors include dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary medicine, nursing, and chiropractic majors. The eligibility requirements are strictly limited to four year universities. A student may also be enrolled in a graduate degree program in a field of allied health. More simply put, the student can be enrolled in a non university program for dental hygiene, medical technology, physical therapy, or speech pathology. There are other programs that fall under this umbrella too, such as graduate programs in behavioral and mental health practices or physician assistants.
Another aspect of the criteria for these student grants is that the student must be from a disadvantaged background. Defined by the U.S. Department of Health, this means that the student is a person who comes from an environment that prohibited the student from obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to enroll in and graduate from a school with a concentration in the health profession. Coming from a background with an extremely low income threshold, determined by the size of the family, is also included in the definition of a disadvantaged background.
The last qualification that a student must meet in order to qualify for these student grants is that he or she must be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States. The territories, including Puerto Rico and islands that are under the control of the United States are included in this statement. There are many student grants that are specific to a particular field of study that a student may be interested in pursuing. It is up to you to put forth the effort in uncovering such grants. By applying for the ones you qualify for, you can find a lot of money readily available for your education.
